Rumors Spark Confusion

A wave of social media posts suggested that OpenAI had recently banned ChatGPT from discussing legal and medical topics altogether, alarming users who rely on it for general information.

OpenAI Sets the Record Straight

Karan Singhal, OpenAI’s head of health AI, clarified on X (formerly Twitter) that this policy isn’t new; ChatGPT’s responses and restrictions regarding sensitive advice have stayed consistent for months.

Policy Update Misunderstood

The October 29 policy update restated that ChatGPT shouldn’t be used for “tailored legal or medical advice” without licensed professional oversight, a standard safety clause meant to prevent misuse.

No Major Policy Change

OpenAI confirmed that the updated wording only reinforced long-standing rules already in place, not a new limitation. ChatGPT’s general ability to discuss health or law topics remains intact.

What Users Can Still Do

Users can continue asking ChatGPT for general insights, explanations of legal concepts, or health education. However, the chatbot should never replace a doctor, lawyer, or certified expert for personal advice.

Claims of Unauthorized Training

CODA, representing major Japanese entertainment companies, states that a large portion of Sora 2’s outputs “closely resemble Japanese content or images,” suggesting the model was trained on copyrighted Japanese IP without permission. 

Legal Framework in Japan

Under Japanese copyright law, prior authorization is generally required to use copyrighted works, and there is “no system allowing one to avoid liability” simply by giving an opt-out afterward, something CODA says Sora 2’s model uses. 

OPT-OUT Policy Under Fire

OpenAI apparently used an opt-out policy (rights-holders must request exclusion) for Sora 2 rather than an opt-in model; CODA argues this is inadequate and may itself violate Japanese copyright law.

Government Pressure

The Japanese government has formally asked OpenAI to stop replicating Japanese artwork via Sora 2, citing that iconic anime and manga represent national cultural treasures.

The organization has asked OpenAI to stop using its members’ works for model training without prior permission and to respond sincerely to copyright infringement concerns related to Sora 2.
