Perplexity promises to keep Chromium open source, invest $3 billion into Chrome/Chromium over two years, maintain Google as the default search engine, and retain most of the current staff.

Strategic PR or a long shot?

Google hasn’t shown any interest in selling Chrome, and analysts predict the company will mount a lengthy legal defense. At best, this move boosts Perplexity’s visibility and promotes its own AI browser, Comet.

Claude Sonnet 4’s working memory has jumped from ~200K to a full 1 million tokens, enough to tackle 75,000–110,000 lines of code or ~2,500 pages at once.

Real-world scale made viable

Now Claude can handle an entire project or large dataset in one call—no more breaking problems into pieces. As Brad Abrams, Anthropic’s product lead, put it, “They have to break up their problems into these small chunks … with a million tokens, the model can handle the entire scope.”

Catching up with rivals

This move matches OpenAI’s April release of a 1M-token GPT-4.1 window. Anthropic’s push signals it won’t get left behind on enterprise-grade memory.
