Sam Udotong, CTO and co‑founder of Fireflies.ai, publicly revealed that in 2017, he and his co‑founder pretended their app’s “AI” was joining meetings, when it was actually just them calling in, staying silent, and manually taking notes. 

Low‑Cost Subscription, High Ambition

They charged $100/month for this “AI” service. According to Udotong, this hustle helped them sustain themselves, “two guys surviving on pizza”, while building traction.  

Privacy and Ethical Concerns

Although Udotong claims early beta customers were aware there was “a human in the loop,” many see this as problematic: it raises questions about transparency, consent, and whether customers truly understood who (or what) was taking their meeting notes.
